Programme

FROCKS ON BIKES MEET THE PAINTER

Leave work behind, hop on your bike and join us in the car park at the bottom of Hobson Street (Pig-Out Point) at 6pm.

Time to relax and enjoy the ride.

We will first head to Te Rewa Rewa Bridge and Lake Rotomanu for a bit of discovery before heading back via Fitzroy, returning to the Coastal Walkway via the bottom of Record Street.

Finish with a visit to Amanda Hewlett’s studio on Buller Street where we will be able to enjoy the company and some refreshments.

Many will already be familiar with Amanda’s expressive paintings strongly anchored to the history of this land.

“Amanda Hewlett is a full-time artist who has lived in Taranaki for the past 20 years. She paints with acrylics, using a very fine Italian pigment without much in the way of fillers so that she can get the multiple clear layers of paint she requires. Her practice also involves rubbing back paint and scratching into the surface of her works. Amanda is inspired by the land and the stories tied to it. She explores her identity as a New Zealander and what that means to her, often incorporating historical images of early New Plymouth in her paintings. Currently, her work reflects on the challenges facing the country as we develop our national identity, stating that “current debate around defining who we are New Zealanders while acknowledging our individual cultural heritages will continue to challenge us as a country.”

Remember to register with Joëlle, your Frock Mamma by texting: 027 705 86 42 so we can let Amanda know how many to expect.
