The Opunake Lions Mountain to Sea Bike Ride starts at the top of the Arawhata Road Opunake and finishes at the Opunake Beach on Taranaki Anniversary Weekend Sunday March 10th. It is a mainly a fun ride with a race option for those more serious or competitive. The ride is approximately 35 km long predominantly down hill. For younger or less fit participants there are a number of places where riders can enter or exit adjacent to roads. Approximately 80% of the ride is on farm tracks, 10% on road and the balance on paddocks. The ride traverses 11 privately owned farms which are not open for riders at any other time of the year.
All profits are given to worthwhile causes:
2018: funding the development of a cycle path around Opunake
2017: the Opunake Surf Life Saving Club
2015: Opunake Fire Brigade, to help them purchase a Thermal Imaging Camera
Previous to this profits have been given to the Opunake High School Hillary Challenge Team and a number of other groups.
